The Friendly History Corner is a blog about Friendly Acres, a neighborhood in Redwood City, California.

The blog started off as a personal notebook documenting items of history from in and around the neighborhood where I live - because at the time that I moved here, in 2001, there was nothing written or published about it, except in City general plans and Census reports.

Furthermore, none of the historical/photographic books of the city that were published in the 90s and last 2 decades, included anything on the neighborhood - except for one photograph.  (...That remains true for the City history books - even in 2016).  It should be noted that there are historical references found occasionally in EIR, Environental Impact Reports, whenever there are plans to develop buildings. But nothing covering the south eastern side of Redwood City.

So my interest peaked and piqued at the same time - and whenever I found any items of information I began to collect them.  It was simply a small attempt to better understand the area where I now reside, and be able to justify to my friends over dinner how fascinating the neighborhood is, and was, and give them a "Did you know...?" story at the same time.

The blog does not pretend to be anything more authoritative than a scrapbook of articles for reference.  If you've landed here and are interested in something you've read then I am very glad.

The blog posts are deliberately not published in a historical chronology - as there are still holes in the timeline to be plugged in.  But rather, in a vignette format, featuring interesting stories or events or personalities from any period. Having said this, the homepage navigation bar does does have an Archive by Decade which when selected has a dropdown menu that allows you to choose articles by decade - so if you select the 1900s - any posts published with information related to the 1900-1909 years will be listed. And if you select the 1920s - you'll find articles related to events from the 1920s, and so on.

If you have a question, comment, item, or tidbit you'd like to contribute about Friendly Acres or surrounding neighborhoods, or if you lived here growing up and have stories or photos you'd like to share, then feel free to drop me a line at the following address:   Friendlyhistorycorner at gmail.com.
We'd like to hear from you!
